Radioactive is an award-winning film about the 1979 Three Mile Island meltdown – the worst commercial nuclear power accident in U.S. history – and its aftermath. It uncovers the never-before-told stories of four intrepid homemakers who take their local community’s case against the plant operator all the way to the Supreme Court – and a young female journalist who’s caught in the radioactive crossfire.
Most of America would be shocked to know the true story of the meltdown at Three Mile Island. Far fewer would ever want such a disaster in their backyard. Professor Heidi Hutner takes us there and meets the people who have no choice but to call the accident their neighbor.
Radioactive features activist and actor Jane Fonda, whose film, The China Syndrome (a fictional account of a nuclear meltdown), opened 12 days before the real disaster in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. For over forty years, the nuclear industry has done everything in their power to cover up their criminal actions, claiming, as they always do, “No one was harmed and nothing significant happened.” However, the film breaks the story of a radical new health study that may finally expose the truth of the meltdown.
Streaming: Radioactive will drop on AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video on March 12, 2024.
Post-film Webinar: March 28, 2024, 8:00 p.m. EST, on the 45th anniversary of the meltdown. Webinar hosted by Beyond Nuclear, “Radioactive: The Women of Three Mile Island, Gender, Justice, and the Future of Nuclear Power.”
Speakers include Director Heidi Hutner, Mary Olson (Gender and Radiation Project), Ana Rondon and Krystal Curley (Navajo Nation), and Green Energy expert Professor Mark Jacobson (Stanford University). Moderated by Cindy Folkers (Beyond Nuclear)
Praise:
“RADIOACTIVE: The Women of Three Mile Island is a compelling and significant documentary in the grand tradition of such trailblazing women filmmakers as Kimberlee Acquaro, Christine Choy, and Barbara Koppel … this is a film that should be rated in supernovas, not stars.”
- Edward Moran, Cinema Daily
“A stunning film. It asks the important question: should we or shouldn’t we with nuclear energy? First-time filmmaker Heidi Hutner answers this question with solid research and interviews with scientists, engineers, whistleblowers, physicians, and most importantly with the victims themselves. RADIOACTIVE is a must-see tour-de-force for anyone who cares about our energy future and our planet.”
- Jon Bowermaster, Award-winning National Geographic filmmaker
“This chilling feminist thriller unveils a host of cover-ups and criminal actions by the nuclear industry and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), who put the Three Mile Island community in mortal danger. The intrepid women and mothers in RADIOACTIVE face Goliath and fight back until the bitter end to uncover the truth and protect their families and community. The filmmakers have created a powerful and essential film that will resonate deeply with everyone who sees it.”
- Dave Chameides, Emmy Award-winning director & cinematographer
